Summer Reading Club 2010

Make a splash at your library this summer, and READ!Catch the Reading Wave with Sneaks! Grab your boogie board and join Sneaks for “splashing” good summer reading fun at the Baltimore County Public Library. The eight weeks of water fun for all ages begin Monday, June 21 and last until Saturday, August 14.

During those weeks there’s “water water everywhere” in free programs, crafts, activities and stories offered for three age groups: “Make a Splash: Read!” for elementary school ages (kindergarten through grade 5); “Make Waves @ Your Library” for teens (grades 6-12); and “Read-to-Me” for preschoolers (birth-5 years). After visiting the library to pick up their game boards and packets, the fun begins.

The water-themed programs for all ages include water magic by sleight-of-hand expert Mike Rose; puppetry on Book Island by Sandi; and underwater world exploration with face-painting storyteller Stephanie Catlett. School ages will find Chesapeake Bay treasures to explore and sharks to meet. Teens have opportunities to “make waves” by participating in community outreach programs that benefit others, such as creating art for shelters, birdhouses for Habitat and a knitted square for a blanket donated to a worthy cause. Throughout the summer everyone can make water-themed crafts using origami, stamp art, collage and weaving techniques.

Registration is easy via optional online registration using the Internet at www.bcpl.info/summerreading or by visiting the branch summer reading table. Elementary ages and preschoolers receive a game board to play. By popular demand, teens play online. Upon completion of their reading activities, all ages receive a prize.

In addition to the fun and prizes, summer reading provides long-term benefits. Joining Sneaks on his pleasurable summer reading adventure helps youngsters maintain their reading skills and also motivates them to become lifelong readers.

Dive in and ride the reading wave this summer by registering now to make splashes at BCPL.
