About Mobile Library Services

Mobile Library Services (MLS) uses four outreach vehicles to provide library access for Baltimore County residents and attend outreach events in the community. The service is comprised of two components: Library On the Go and Read Rover.

Library on the Go

These vehicles visit senior centers, retirement communities, assisted living facilities, special needs schools and limited community stop providing access to materials, including item reservations and delivery services. They provide access to:

  • New and popular novels and non-fiction books

  • Books for children of all ages

  • Books on CD

  • Digital Materials

  • Magazines

  • Any of BCPL's circulating materials

  • eReaders

You can request any material to be sent or held for you to pick up in a vehicle by selecting 'Mobile Library Services' as your pick-up branch or ask a library staff member to request a book for you.

Returns from any branch are accepted and material checked out from Mobile Library Services may be returned to any branch.

Fees can be paid on the bookmobile by using a personal check or money order. Cash is not accepted on the bookmobile. Fees may also be paid at any branch of the Baltimore County Public Library or by logging into your online account.

Read Rover

These vehicles visit licensed daycare providers and home providers, offering story time programs and access to materials to develop early literacy skills.

About Read Rover and Read Rover Plus

Photo of Story Time in book mobileRead Rover and Read Rover Plus support BCPL's mission to foster a lifelong love of reading in children. This is accomplished through our monthly visits to licensed day care providers.

Each month librarians perform an engaging story time. Our story time programs incorporate pre-reading skills which prepare the children for entering school. Additional circulation staff and librarians assist daycare providers with checking out materials.

Our storytellers model successful techniques during the programs to teach day care providers important early literacy skills that they can then share with the children and their parents.

Themed flyers are distributed each month containing booklists, reading tips, a rhyme or fingerplay, and a craft. Picture books, teacher resources, easy non-fiction, concept books, CDs, DVDs, and storytelling materials are all available for checkout to further support this goal.
